Most of the wildlife species throughout both North and South Carolina are able to thrive around humans – without any conflicts arising. In most instances, interactions are relatively positive. However, it is possible for conflicts with wildlife to occur.
The good news is, there are measures that may be taken to avoid negative interactions with wildlife. In short, simply understand that most of the wildlife in the Carolinas are only looking for water sources, food sources, and shelter to ensure their safety.
If you find wildlife becoming a nuisance on your property, simply remove their access to resources. Additionally, follow these steps:
- While it may be tempting, avoid providing food to creatures in the wild. Not only does not result in the animals losing their natural fear of people, they will start to view people as a food source and may even approach you.
- If you have pets that go outdoors, you should always remove food and water that you leave outdoors for those pets. If you must keep food outdoors for storage purposes, secure it in a container that cannot be easily opened.
- If your home has crawlspaces underneath a porch or the home itself, these areas should be closed and secured. It is common for animals in the wild to use these locations to have, protect, and raise their young.
- If there are trees near your home, you should make sure that you trim back the limbs ever so often. This way, various types of wildlife are unable to gain access to the roof, attic, or chimney of your home.
- If you have pets that go outdoors, protect them. You may leash them, keep them contained within a fence, or you may supervise them at all times while they are outdoors. If they are left to roam without any type of supervision or containment, it could result in contact with wild predators, wildlife that is diseased, or wildlife that will engage in fighting in order to protect what they feel is their territory.
