When it comes to human-wildlife conflicts the most common scenario would most likely end up being squirrels in the attic. We have probably all been there. We are sitting in our homes and we hear a sound. What could it be? Could it be your imagination or just the wind? Hopefully, it is not an intruder. Then you hear it again. You make out the sound of scampering feet, and you know it is an intruder but not the human kind. You have squirrels living in your house. What can you do to get rid of these unwanted guests? Well, I am sad to say that it is a very difficult job, especially if you have no experience in removing squirrels. Here we take a look at some of the ideas many people think will help them rid their houses of these pests but do not work as well as they think.
- Rat poison. Many people think that they can just put out some rat poison, and the squirrels will eat it up and die. However, most squirrels will not touch rat poison, so you will not kill them. Even if you did end up killing them, which would not be the humane way of removing squirrels, but you would have to seal up the holes to prevent new squirrels from entering your home. You would also need to find and remove the dead squirrels, which is definitely not on the top of my to do list.
- Squirrel traps. Most people think they can just set up a trap inside or outside of their house, and they will catch the squirrels and move them some place else. However, this rarely works. Most squirrels would not enter a trap in the attic, and very few rarely enter a trap outside. You might be able to catch a few of them but certainly not all of them, and you would also have to find and seal the entry holes in your house.
- Squirrel repellent gimmicks. There are many squirrel removal products out there that you can buy that is guaranteed to get rid of your unwanted guests. If it was as easy as using some kind of repellent powder, spray, a noise machine or a flashing light, then we would not need any professional wildlife removers. These gimmicks are simply a way consumers can waste their hard earned money on products that will not deliver the end result that they wanted.
It can be very distressful finding a wild animal in your house, and it can be hard trying to find someone who has the answers you need. You may think that you can simply find home remedies on the internet that can help you rid yourselves of squirrels. However, the real solution would be to forget all the hearsay on the web and call in the professionals. Squirrels are still wild animals and can behave unpredictably, so it would be beneficial to seek an expert’s opinion before you try to remove any wild animal from your house.
