In most instances, foxes do not pose any complications and are typically considered to be solitary creatures; however, this may change during the winter months – especially through the Carolinas.
If the winter is exceptionally active, these creatures may have difficulty locating food and prey. As their hunger levels increase, a fox is more likely to move towards residential areas in search of food. As a result, they could result in damage to property or they may prey on small pets and other types of small creatures – such as fowl.
Additionally, they may attempt to create a space for themselves underneath porches, in or around sheds, and in or around barns. In any of these circumstances, foxes may prove to be troublesome.
What Is the Legal Status of the Fox in South Carolina?
Foxes are considered to be “furbearers”. This means that they may be hunted or may be trapped during the appropriate season. In most instances, this is from the 1st of December to the 1st of March. If a hunting license is held, they may be hunted on private property starting on Thanksgiving Day.
If a fox becomes a nuisance, a Depredation Permit allows them to be taken on any day of the year. This permit is not required if the nuisance fox is within 100 yards of the taker’s residence.

Foxes that get rabies are a threat to surrounding wildlife, pets, and humans. Foxes may also develop canine distemper which may be passed to domestic animals. It is not common for foxes to attack people; however, if they feel threatened or are diseased, they may lash out when approached.
Accidental bites may occur if people have provided a fox with food as the creature will view the human as a food source. Even with these possibilities, it is rare that a fox is a danger or poses any health or safety concern among people.

Foxes cause various types of damage. This includes damage to turf when digging for food, damage to crops, damage to various types of livestock, and damage when burrowing around structures.
