The most common nuisances during this time of the year include -but, are not at all limited to – skunks, rodents, opossums, and raccoons. The good news is, there are several simple strategies for preventing these pesky pests from taking up residency at your home this holiday season. Continue reading to learn more!

Eliminate Water Sources

The first step to preventing wildlife infestations this winter is to eliminate all water sources. Chances are, there won’t be too many because the cold temperatures are likely to result in freezes and snow.

You can’t do much about that; however, if you have an outdoor pool, pond, or bird bath, it is advised that you cover it as some days may bring warm enough temperatures to thaw the water. If you have pets, only leave water bowls out for short amounts of time. In most instances, your pets will probably be indoors, so even this will likely not be an issue.

Eliminate Food Sources

If you set bird feeders and/or squirrel feeders outdoors, you should bring them in during the night time hours. If you store your garbage outdoors, be sure to make certain the lids are secure. In fact, it is best to use garbage cans that have locking lids. You should also pay attention to the food sources inside of your home -just in case a critter finds its way indoors.

Seal all food in airtight containers, do not leave pet food out overnight, store bread and cereals in appropriate containers, and make certain that your floors are swept, mopped, and vacuumed regularly.

Eliminate Potential Shelters

You should ensure that your yard is kept clean, mowed, and free of debris at all times. If you store firewood, make certain it is lifted at least 2 feet from the ground. The shrubbery and trees should be trimmed back away from the roof and other accessible areas to your home.

If you have a garage, be certain to clean and organize it completely. You should always clean off your roof and completely clean out the gutter system and the chimney space.
